Torre di Cancelli is one of the many castles of Tuscany. Once part of the Badia a Coltibuono estate, it has been well renovated into a unique villa with all the medieval characterists of its high tower maintained.
The property has a simple pool, nestled at the end of the sloped garden. It's surrounded by a pretty wooden sundeck and partly shaded by the large trees of the garden.
Infront of Torre di Cancelli is a flagstone terrace which leads up to a bamboo covered terrace furnished with tables and chairs for dining al fresco. From this area there are pretty views of the Chianti beyond the immediate forest covered hills.
Steps lead up to the first floor of the building where there is a small loggia and the entrance to the Torre dei Cancelli castle. On entering there is a spacious and bright reception room which is furnished with a table and 4 chairs. This room, like the rest of the first floor, has the original terracotta floor and a high ceiling of terracotta tiles and wooden beams. To one side is a small bathroom with shower.
A stone arched door leads into the living area of the castle. This is a large spacious room with a dining table with 6 chairs, which can seat up to 10 people, on one side. To the otherside of the room are two large sofas and an armchair. The room is completed by the original fireplace which has had an efficient wood burning stove placed insider to provide heat on the cooler Tuscan nights.
Off the living room is a small hall which leads to two bedrooms. The first is a children's bedroom. It has two good, but low, single beds and a cot. The room can be used by adults but it's well furnished for children. It includes some toys and books.
The second bedroom off the hall is a double bedroom which can be made into a twin room if requested when booking. This spacious room is done in warm peach colours. It has a small wardrobe with some drawers and writing desk, in one corner is a comfortable armchair. En-suite to this room is a large spacious bathroom which has a 2metre circular bathtub with large shower head above it. This room has wooden floors.
To the other side of the living room is the huge master bedroom. It has the original stone walls exposed and plenty of light from the two windows. It is furnished with a large wardrobe, small chest of drawers, a writing desk and an armchair. Rugs cover the antique terracotta floor.
The kitchen is off the reception room through an original stone arched door. This room has a high vaulted ceiling of exposed stone. This is the first floor of the tower. It's paved with wood and has a lovely warm feel. Along one wall is the marble topped kitchen unit equipped with a large oven, 5 gas hobs and large fridge with separate freezer. The sink is a traditional Tuscan stone sink. In the centre of the room is a wooden table with 4 chairs. Wooden steps lead to the next floor of the tower.
The spiral stairs from the kitchen lead through a hatch door onto the second floor of the tower. This part of Torre dei Cancelli still has it's original medieval arched windows and spyholes which provide light to the rooms. The walls are all exposed stone. The floors and ceilings of the tower rooms are all in wood. On this floor there is an iron bed set up as a sitting area.
Going up wooden stairs there is the third floor. In the floor above the stairs is a glass section which looks down to the room below. This floor has a bathroom with tub and shower over the tub. To one side is a futon and above this there is a sturdy mezzanine floor with a double mattress on it, although this is more comfortable for a single person. From the windows of the tower rooms there are wonderful views of the surrounding hills and castle gardens below.
Further stairs lead up to the fourth and final floor of the tower. This is a lovely spacious and romantic double bedroom. It has a vaulted stone ceiling. To one side is a very low window providing light and great views, while to the other a skylight provides further light. The room is simply furnished with a small chest of drawers and a small exposed hanging rail.
Torre di Cancelli is a lovely Tuscan castle, completely unique with its medieval tower. However, some areas are not ideal for young children and guests with limited mobility. The owner has lived here with his young family.
There is a small cottage on the property which is not used.
The steps from the kitchen leading up to the tower are narrow and steep, they are not for young children, nor is it possible to take large luggage up them.

Pool Info
The pool is down a steep grassy slope, in the simple garden, a short distance away from the castle. It can be seen from the entrance to the castle. The views from the pool are of the forested hills on all sides of the property. The best views are from the terrace below the tower.
The pool is a prefabricated pool surrounded by a wooden sundeck, which has several sun beds to one side. Shade is provided by the large trees near the pool.
The pool is 8x4 metres and 1.2 metres deep. It's open from May to Mid October. There are metal steps up to the pool.

Nearest town
The nearest town is Gaiole in Chianti where there is a selection of shops and restaurants. This town is about 5km away from Torre di Cancelli. In Montevarchi, 15km away, there is a large hypermarket.

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
