Casa del Mastro at San Sano
Location address: San Sano - Siena
Casa del Mastro is set in the heart of the picturesque village of San Sano, an idyllic medieval village nestling in the heart of the Chianti vineyards and a haven of Tuscan tranquility. With views over the vine clad hillsides surrounding the hamlet and just a short stroll from the delightful restaurant and local grocery store, this lovely villa has a small garden and terrace that enjoys sunshine throughout the day and allows guests to relax in the stunning sunsets over an early evening glass of wine.
Casa del Mastro is located in the main part of the newly restored 12th Century wine merchant’s house, and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms so can comfortably accommodate four people. The addition of a double sofa bed and 2 single guest beds gives guests the added benefit and flexibility of being able to sleep an extra 2 people if required.
Access to the villa is through its own cast iron gate into the garden area which is mainly laid to lawn with Mediterranean trees and shrubs. The terrace has table, chairs and umbrella perfect for outside dining and there are also sun loungers for guests use. The stone pathway leads to the swimming pool.
The villa is accessed via four steps leading up from the patio area, directly into the kitchen. This is a bright modern galley kitchen with fitted units along one wall. Fully equipped the kitchen has plenty of storage, a built in oven with separate gas hob, a dishwasher and large free standing fridge/freezer.
The downstairs is very light and spacious : an archway from the kitchen leads into the dining room which has the traditional Tuscan wooden dining table and 6 chairs with matching furniture. Double wooden doors which can remain open if required lead through into the bright and comfortable lounge area which has two sofas, one of which can double up as a sofa bed; there is also a TV and a DVD player.
There are terracotta tiled floors and beamed and tiled ceilings throughout the ground floor of the villa. A further door from the lounge leads back into the kitchen and the stairs to the first floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine. Both bedrooms have air conditioning units. The master bedroom has a double bed and own bathroom with full size bath, a large separate shower, basin and WC.
The second bedroom has twin beds. In addition, each bed has a pull out single bed underneath, which would be suitable for children to use. There is an ensuite bathroom with large shower, basin and WC.
Set in a lovely picturesque village surrounded by vineyards, this is a wonderful place to relax and unwind.
There is a charge for Air con.
All of the upstairs rooms are located under the roof of the property and therefore have sloping ceilings with some height restriction.
High-speed wireless internet access available for an additional fee of 20 Euros per week. Please bring your own laptop.

Savor the historic richness of San Sano while enjoying a relaxing day by the pool situated within the property’s private vineyards. Staying in the pristine village is a unique journey back into time when life was slow and passionate; and neighbors sat in their yards and sipped wine while watching the sunset.
The village of San Sano is a step back into thousands of years of history. With less than 100 residents, San Sano is nestled among the vineyard-covered rolling hills of Tuscany. Within the small village, is the property once owned by a local winemaker, and now fully restored into individual villas with every detail carefully monitored to ensure the structures remain authentic and untainted.
San Sano has one restaurant, a small grocery store, and an intimate church with Sunday morning services at 10. This medieval village is surrounded by walking paths, which are ideal for early morning walks and bike rides. The large pool is on the edge of the villas, adjacent to the vineyards. The pool, accessed by ladders, is 14 meters by 7 meters and has comfortable sunbeds in which to relax while catching up on reading. The pool is open from Easter through November.
San Sano has a rich history – just ask any local! They’ll tell you about the “boozy frog” fountain in the small park where neighbors gather throughout the day. Many years ago, a resident of San Sano was a contestant on a game show and told an outrageous tale about how the frogs in his village got drunk from drinking Chianti wine from the bottle. It was such a wild story that he won the contest and with his prize money, he bought the fountain for the community to enjoy.
The villas in San Sano are ideal for traveling couples who want to split their holiday time between wine tastings, relaxing around the pool, walks in the surrounding areas and taking day trips to other villages, and dining in all the great Tuscan local restaurants. One couple may want to explore, while the other couple stays at the villa.
San Sano is a short drive to dozens of charming villages, and the larger communities of Gaiole in Chianti, Radda and Siena. It has everything anyone could imagine to capture the true Tuscan experience.
A parking area is available for guests use.

What were the highlights of your holiday? ALL of the stuff we did and saw while trundling around Tuscany from our base in San Sano.
What was your overall impression of the accommodation? Accomodation was really good and would have been excellent if the problems with the Electricity supply could be sorted out - Kettle and toaster, when used together blew the power a couple of times and we couldn't have the washing machine running if we wanted to use either Kettle OR toaster OR oven. Also shower in one room was like bathing in a coffin (very small and no room to move so don't drop the soap or you have to get out of the shower to pick it up (and I'm not what you would call fat!) Having said that, the location (San Sano) was brilliant, the staff we dealt with were helpful and freindly and the locaton was absolutely perfect for day trips to all the lovely villages surrounding San Sano as well as visits to Siena and Florence. Thank you.
Did you have any unpleasant surprises during your stay with us? See comments provided for first question
Do you have any other comments regarding the accommodation or service? Just to say that we loved it at San Sano - Casa Del Mastro and thought it was excellent value for money and a lovely quiet, peaceful little village to stay in.

What were the highlights of your holiday? There were no highlights or our two whole weeks were a highlight. Tuscany (Chianti) both countryside and towns is just fabulous.
what was your overall impression of the accommodation? The accommodation was excellent. It could be improved with the addition of a microwave oven. Also, it should be explained that all programming on the TV is in Italian and that non-Italian clients wanting to use the TV should bring DVDs.
Did you have any unpleasant surprises? On two occasions we got lost in Siena because we erroneously believed that the way out was to leave Siena. But all roads leaving Siena go in different directions meaning that if you aren't on the right one you get more and more lost. Our problems were compounded by not having a map. In two weeks we were not able to find one - we found maps for central Siena and maps showing the roads around Siena but no maps that showed how the outlying roads connected to those in central Siena. If such a map does exist see comment below.
Do you have any other comments? The information package for the condo should include a map of Siena that shows how the central Siena streets are linked to the roads that lead into and out of Siena - if such a map exists!

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
